An active sentence tells us that someone (subject) is doing (verb) something to the (object).

The children

 walked

In a passive sentence the subject is not active but passive. That means that the subject is having something done to it.

The dog 

 was walked by

Here is an account of someone baking a cake.  It is written in active sentences.

Here is an example:

He cleaned the glass with a soft cloth = active.    

The glass was cleaned with a soft cloth = passive

He preheated the oven to 180°.
