The fraction ½ can be written in several equivalent ways.

This shows that ½ = 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5

0.5 is the same as 0.50 and 0.500 and 0.5000 etc.

 

½ of 100 = 100 ÷ 2 = 50, so ½ can also be written as 50%.

 

So ½ = 0.5 = 50%

 

You should know the following simple equivalences.

You should also be able to work out multiples of fifths, tenths and hundredths, for example...

3/5 = 3 × 0.2 = 0.6 = 60%

7/10 = 7 × 0.1 = 0.7 = 70%

8/100 = 8 × 0.01 = 0.08 = 8%
