The prefix mis- generally has the meaning of doing something wrongly when it is added to a verb.

I must have misplaced my glasses. I can't find them anywhere.

Sometimes the prefix can have a figurative meaning as well as a literal one. Look at the following sentence.

The burglars' plan miscarried and they were caught by the police.

 

In this example the verb miscarry means to go wrong rather than to carry something wrongly.
