In this activity, we will use pictures to help us to find quarters of numbers.

Look at this picture, which shows 8 balls.

The whole group has 8 balls.

To find one quarter, split the group into four equal groups.

Each group has 2 balls.

¼ of 8 is 2

Top tip: If you find it hard to split the pictures into equal groups, use a pencil and paper to draw dots in different groups and then count them.

For example, draw four circles to use for the four groups: circle A, circle B, circle C and circle D. Draw one dot in each circle, counting as you go 1, 2, 3, 4

Then draw one more dot in each circle: 5, 6, 7, 8.  You should have drawn two dots in each circle, so one quarter of 8 is 2.
