If the adverb consists of more than one word it is called an adverbial phrase.

Adverbs and adverbial phrases can be put into different groups depending on the type of information they add to the action.

 

Adverbs of manner answer the question 'How?'

He knocked loudly.

She walked slowly.

This is the type of adverb that you probably learned about when you were younger. Many adverbs of manner end in -ly, although not all of them do.

 

Adverbs of time answer the question 'When?'

My dad is coming home tomorrow.

She caught the train early yesterday morning.

 

Adverbs of place answer the question 'Where?'

Kayla is working outside.

Jamie lives in London.
