In this activity, we will be putting temperatures in order.

Example

Put these temperatures in order (coldest number first).

 -5°C  -3°C  2°C  -4°C  -1°C

Answer

The numbers on the left-hand side of zero are negative numbers, such as -12 and -87

As we move left from zero, the numbers get colder/smaller.

When we look at the number line below, -5 is the coldest temperature on it.

          -5          -4          -3          -2          -1          0          1          2          3

In the list of temperatures above, -5°C is the coldest temperature and 2°C is the hottest temperature.

The correct order is:

 -5°C  -4°C  -3°C  -1°C  2°C

Note that positive numbers are always warmer than negative temperatures!
