Hi word creator!

In this activity, we are going to be using letters from one word to make a new word.

Look at the word pairs below. The second word is missing in one of the pairs.

fold (old)      late ( ____ )

The second word in the second pair is created using the same pattern as the first pair.

So you need to consider how the word fold becomes the word old. We have used the last three letters of the word fold to create the word old.

Now we have worked out the pattern. We must use the last three letters of the word late to make our mystery word. Our mystery word is ate.

fold [old]      late [ate]

Let’s try another:

Can you work out the pattern here?

lose (sole)        lame ( ____ )

How has the word lose become the word sole? The third and first letters have swapped around!

We need to apply the same pattern for the word lame. This gives us the missing word male.

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

Always check which letters from the first word have been used to make the second word.

In this activity, you will need to be a word wizard and find the missing word in a pair. Let’s get started!
