This activity is about finding 1 less than a given number.

 

 

We do this by taking 1 away from the given number.

When we take 1 away, we go to the whole number just before the number we started with.

 

Example 1

Write the number that is:

 

1 less than 33

 

Answer

33 - 1 = 32

 

When we count we go.... 30, 31, 32, 33.

32 is the number just before 33.

 

So, the answer is 32

 

Example 2

 

Write the number that is:

 

1 less than 50

 

Answer

50 - 1 = 49

 

Don't be put off because your new number has a different number of tens - it is still the number that comes before 50.

 

When we count we go ........47, 48, 49, 50

49 is the number just before 50.

 

So, the answer is 49
