When we talk or write about something that is happening now, we use the present tense.

boy playing violin

Jack is playing his violin. He practises every day.

When we talk or write about something that has already happened, we use the past tense.

Jack played his violin at the school concert last week.

To put verbs into the past tense, we often add -ed to the verb. These are called regular verbs.

play / played

walk / walked

Unfortunately, this rule does not work for a lot of verbs, including some of the ones we use the most. These are called irregular verbs and we just have to learn them.

eat / ate

swim / swam

In this activity,  we will practise putting irregular verbs into the past tense.
