In this activity, you will be asked to work out how many more chicks one hen has than the other.

a chick

Example:

Count how many chicks Hatty has and find that number on the number line.

Next, count how many chicks Betty has and find that number on the number line too.

Can you count how many numbers there are in between? This is called finding the difference.

You can use the number line to help you:

Who has more chicks?

Hatty

Count Hatty's chicks. She has 5 chicks. Find that on the number line.

Betty

Count Betty's chicks. She has 1 chick. Find that on the number line.

How many more chicks does Hatty have?

The difference between 5 and 1 can be seen on the number line. Start at the number 5 and jump your finger backwards to the number 1, one number at a time. You'll find that your finger had to do 4 jumps. So the difference between the numbers is 4.

This can be written as 5 subtract 1 = 4 or 5 - 1 = 4

Answer  =  4

Hatty has 4 more chicks than Betty.
