Addition is adding something on.

When you add everything together, you get a total.

Look at this addition:

 

16 + 2 = ?

 

Answer

Start at 16 and count 2 forward.

What do you get then?

Use the number line below to help you count on.

 

16 + 2 = 18

 

 

Start at the number 16 on the number line. Move 2 numbers to the right and you get to 18. So, 16 + 2 = 18.

Always move to the right on a number line when you are adding.
