When we write we tend to use verbs like said and went too often, and it can make our writing very dull.

For example, if we write 'Peter went home' we are not giving any information about how Peter went. Was he in a hurry or did he take his time?

We could use adverbs such as 'quickly' or 'slowly' to give more detail, but it can be more effective to use a powerful verb instead.

boy running

Peter raced home.

(Perhaps it was his birthday and he was in a hurry to get home and open his presents.)

Peter limped home. (Peter had hurt his leg during the football match and couldn't walk properly.)
