Look at this table which shows the place value of numbers up to millions.

Learn the value of each column and understand how each number is written.

Place value grid

      6 0 2 5
6 0 9 2 0 4 7
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

The numbers shown above are:

Six thousand and twenty-five

Six million, ninety-two thousand and forty-seven

One million, two hundred and thirty-four thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven

Sometimes it helps to read in groups of three.

For example:

6 thousand, then 25.

6 million, then 92 thousand, then 47.

1 million, then 234 thousand, then 567.

To make it easier to read large numbers, it is usual to place a comma to separate them into groups of three:

6,025

6,092,047

1,234,567

Sometimes you will see them separated by a gap which works in the same way as the comma, making it easier to read the number.
