There are concerns this month that government reforms could mean children with special educational needs may more easily be missed. Statements of special educational needs (SENs) could be scrapped meaning social and emotional problems may become harder to identify and make it more difficult for appropriate support to be provided.

There are many different forms of SEN. All children learn differently and currently children with SEN are offered different ways of being taught certain concepts, additional adult help and access to specialist equipment.

As a parent, don’t wait for your child’s school to identify problems, take a proactive approach by considering if you think your child has more difficulties than the majority of other children of their age with learning and understanding, communicating, relating to others or physical development. Seek opinions from teachers and, if appropriate, doctors.
