Why some people choose to home educate

The idea of one type education-for-all goes against the nature of humanity. We are all different and therefore we respond differently to situations. Diversity is what makes our world such an exciting and vivid place to be! How boring would it be if we all liked the same flavour ice cream or all wanted to drive the same car for example? Differences are what makes our communities colourful and interesting, which is much needed in our pressure-filled lives.

Opening up conversations about home education

Everyone has an opinion on home education - rightly so! It’s these conversations that lead to change and open-mindedness, to talk and converse with others that have differing opinions, allows insight into new ideas and makes you explore avenues you would have never discovered otherwise!

Home education in the news

There has been a lot in the press about homeschooling recently, the BBC reported that there has been a rise of over 40% in the last three years.

The Guardian discussed the rise in home education too in the past couple of months. It seems that there is a new headline every week!

Home Education experts!

I have recently been speaking to Jen at 2Cool4School. Jen is a home educator and runs the 2Cool4School website which is a Home Educator Hub. We have had lots of interesting conversations about Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and the cross over with home educating. It’s great to speak to someone that is so passionate and knowledgeable in her field.

One of the things we have been discussing is the huge link between home educating and SEND for many different reasons, some of which I have listed below.

Reasons to home educate?

There are many reasons why people choose to home educate and some of them are found here in the faqs section of Jen’s website. Often there are several reasons or a combination of factors that lead people into home educating.

Some children require a more adaptable education in a familiar and comfortable environment
Some families prefer to teach their children in a more holistic way and choose subjects and topics in more detail that are more relevant to them
Bullying issues at school
Religious or cultural beliefs
Schools aren’t always able to meet the needs of children with additional needs or specific learning differences
