Worksheet Overview

Hi word creator!

In this activity, we are going to be using letters from two words to make a new word.

Here are two groups of words. Letters from the two words on the outside of the brackets are used to create the word on the inside of the brackets.

crab   (able)  lend     fish ( ____ )  open

We need to work out how crab and lend can be joined to make the word able, and then use this same rule to make a new word with fish and open.

In this case, we take the last two letters of the first word and the first two letters of the second word.

crab   (able)   lend          fish  ( ____ )  open

a cartoon shop

So the answer is shop!

Let’s try another:

Can you work out the pattern here?

shot  (ship)  trip      flag ( ____ )  shop

We use the first two letters from the first word shot and the last two letters from the word trip to make the word ship.

a ship

So we need to use the first two letters from flag and the last two letters from the word shop to make our mystery word. Our mystery word is flop!

shot  (ship)  trip          flag  (flop)  shop

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

First, think about the way the middle word is put together in the first group.

Then, follow the same pattern to find the missing word in the second group.

In this activity, you will need to be a word wizard and find the missing word in a pair.

Let’s get started!
