Key stage:  KS 2

Curriculum topic:   Verbal Reasoning

Curriculum subtopic:   Move a Letter

Difficulty level:

### QUESTION 1 of 10

Greetings word detective, thank goodness you’re here!

We need your expertise in solving the following puzzle.

Can you help us?

We need to remove a letter from the first word and insert that same letter into the second word.

We have to make sure we are left with two real words after this.

munch            pat

First, we need to find a letter to remove from munch that leaves us with a real word.

If we remove the n from munch, we are left with the word much.

Now, we need to fit the letter n into the word pat to make another real word.

If we insert the letter n after the second letter in pat, we get the word pant.

The answer is the letter n, as this is the letter that we moved.

Let’s try another example together now.

Which letter can we move from the first word to the second word, to create two new words?

three                 trust

First, we need to find a letter to remove from three that leaves us with a real word.

If we remove the h from three, we are left with the word tree.

Now, we need to fit the letter h into the word trust to make another real word.

If we insert the letter h after the first letter in trust, we get the word thrust.

The answer is the letter h, as this is the letter that we moved.

Let’s try one more challenging question together.

Which letter can we move from the first word to the second word to create two new words?

blend              tale

First, we need to find a letter to remove from the word blend that leaves us with a real word.

If we remove the b, we are left with the word lend.

Now, this word is a little different! There are other letters we could also remove.

We could remove the l to make bend and the n to make bled.

We need to see which of the three letters (b, l or n), we can fit into the word tale to make a real word.

The correct answer is b, as we can fit it into tale to make the word table.

Now, it’s your turn to find letters that can be removed from the first word and added to the second.

Say each of the newly formed words out loud, this will help you to recognise which ones are real words.

Good luck letter switcher!

WASTER          EVER

Type the two new words you have created in the box below.

Make sure that you leave only one space between the words and write them in the correct order or your answer may be marked incorrectly.

Water Sever
EDDIE SAYS
Did you remember to use only one space between your new words and to write them in the same order? Firstly, we need to decide which letters we can remove from the word WASTER which will leave behind a real word which still makes sense. We can remove the S to make WATER or the R to make WASTE. Now, which of these letters can we add into the second word EVER? We can only add the S, to make the new word SERVER. It is not possible to add the R in a way which creates a new, real word which makes sense. How did you get on with this first challenge, word detective?

Did you remember to use only one space between your new words and to write them in the same order? Moving the N is the only option that works here, making the new word pair of LAW and PATTERN. Great work so far, detective!
• Question 3

Move one letter from the first word and add it to the second word.

SMALL          WATER

Type the two new words you have created in the box below.

Mall Waster
Mall Waters
EDDIE SAYS
S is the only letter we can remove from the word SMALL which leaves behind a viable real word - MALL. However, we can choose to add this letter in two different places in the word WATER - WASTER or WATERS. Both of these answers would be marked as correct. Which option did you choose? Did you use only one space in your answer and keep the words in the same order?
• Question 4

PROUD          FOND
