Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Hi, word detective!

Our letter thief has been at it again!

The thief has stolen three letters from a word but they have left a clue behind to help us figure out what the word is.

The three letters make a real word themselves.

The clue is a synonym, which is a word with a very similar meaning.

Let’s have a look at the partial word:

Synonym  Partial Word
investigate EXPL

The word has had three of its letters removed.

What could these letters be and where could they have been removed from?

magnifying glass

The stolen letters make the word ORE and the word is EXPLORE.

Here is another word with three missing letters which make a word themselves:

MAHON

This time, the thief has left behind a different kind of clue:

Clue Partial Word
A long running event MAHON

What could these letters be and where could they have been removed from?

girl

The missing letters make the word RAT and the full word is MARATHON.

In this activity, you will be a word detective and work out the missing letters in partial words.

This time, each of the sets of letters missing also forms a word on its own.

The thief has left you a clue or a synonym for each word; this will help you to work out what the full word is.

Psst! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

You can use a thesaurus to help you if you get stuck.

Good luck locating those missing letters and remember that they also make a word on their own!

A very valuable, yellow-coloured metal

GO
EDDIE SAYS
Let's employ our three steps: 1) Which word fits this clue? What is the name of a valuable, yellow-coloured metal? GOLD 2) Which letters need to be added to the word LD to create GOLD? GO 3) Is this a word on its own? Yes! There are other options which could be created, such as TOLD, but only GOLD fits with this clue.
  • Question 2

Here is part of a word:

GRY

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Furious

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
AN
EDDIE SAYS
What is another word for 'furious'? The missing word AN is part of the longer word ANGRY. Another word such as GRAVY would not be correct, as AV is not a word on its own, plus GRAVY does not fit with this clue.
  • Question 3

Here is part of a word:

ION

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

You might cry if you cut this vegetable

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
ON
EDDIE SAYS
Which vegetable makes you cry when you cut it up? An ONION, of course! Which letters are missing from the starting letters ION to create the word ONION? If we add the word ON to the start, we can reach this word. Remember that the two letters you add must make a word on their own.
  • Question 4

Here is part of a word:

KNE

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

Used for chopping and cutting

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
IF
EDDIE SAYS
What do we use for chopping and cutting? A KNIFE. The missing word IF is part of the word KNIFE. This was a tricky one to spell - how did you get on, word detective? You could make another word, such as KNEEL, but EL is not a word on its own, plus it does not match this clue.
  • Question 5

Here is part of a word:

CRP

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Crunchy

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
IS
EDDIE SAYS
A bit of a tricky one! What is another word for 'crunchy'? The missing word IS is part of the longer word CRISP. An option such as CRAMP would not be correct, as it does not fit with this clue.
  • Question 6

Here is part of a word:

CEMA

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

You can watch a film here

popcorn

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
IN
EDDIE SAYS
Popcorn anyone? Where do we watch films? At a CINEMA, so the letters IN are missing. Do you enjoy visiting the CINEMA?
  • Question 7

Here is part of a word:

SLL

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word.

Here is a clue to help you:

You can find this at the beach

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
HE
EDDIE SAYS
What can you find at the beach? Sand, sun, sea, and many other things... but what fits with the letters provided? The missing word HE is part of the longer word SHELL. A word such as SMALL could be created, but wouldn't fit with this clue.
  • Question 8

Here is part of a word:

AUTH

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Writer

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
OR
EDDIE SAYS
What is another name for a 'writer'? OR is part of the longer word AUTHOR. How did you get on with this one detective?
  • Question 9

Here is part of a word:

NOY

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word.

Here is a synonym to help you:

Loud

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
IS
EDDIE SAYS
What is another word for 'loud' with a similar meaning? The missing word IS is part of the word NOISY. The word ANNOY could be created by adding the word AN, but it would not fit with this clue. Let's take a look at your last case to crack now detective...
  • Question 10

Here is part of a word:

SLL

It has had two of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a two-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Sniff

Type the two-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
ME
EDDIE SAYS
Which word has a similar meaning to 'sniff'? The missing word ME is part of the longer word SMELL. A word such as SHELL could be created by adding the word HE, but this would not match this clue. Well done for catching up with the cheeky letter thief in this activity! You can now add two-letter words into a group of letters to create new, longer words, which also matches a clue or synonym provided.
