Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Hi, word detective!

Our letter thief has been at it again!

The thief has stolen four letters from a word but they have left a clue behind to help us figure out what the word is.

The four letters make a real word themselves.

The clue is a synonym, which is a word with a very similar meaning.

Let’s have a look at the partial word:

Synonym Partial Word
 Investigate  EXA

The word has had four of its letters removed.

What could these letters be and where have they been removed from?

The stolen letters make the word MINE and the word is EXAMINE.

Here is another word with four missing letters which make a word themselves:

BING

This time, the thief has left behind a different kind of clue:

Clue Partial Word
 Cleaning your teeth    BING

What could the missing letters be that form a word themselves and where have they been removed from?

The missing letters make the word RUSH and the full word is BRUSHING.

In this activity, you will be a word detective and work out the missing letters in partial words.

This time, each of the sets of letters missing, also form a word on their own.

The thief has left you a clue or a synonym for each word; this will help you to work out what the full word is.

Psst! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

You can use a thesaurus to help you if you get stuck.

Good luck finding those missing letters and remember that these letters also make a word on their own.

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

The time of the day that comes after the afternoon

clock

CORRECT ANSWER
EVEN
EDDIE SAYS
Let's get ourselves off the mark here, detective. What is 'the time of day that comes after the afternoon'? It could be NIGHT or EVENING. NIGHT does not work with the letters provided, so let's explore EVENING. Which letters do we need to add to ING to convert these starting letters into the word EVENING? If we add the four-letter word EVEN to the start, we can reach this target word. The word MORNING is also a time of the day and can be created by adding four letters, but it does not come after the afternoon. How did you get on with this first mystery, word detective? Are you ready for another?
  • Question 2

Here is part of a word:

ON

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Class

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
LESS
EDDIE SAYS
This time we have been given a synonym. What is another word which has a similar meaning to 'class'? The word LESS can be added at the start of ON to create the mystery word LESSON. This was a tricky synonym to work with, as the word 'class' has a number of different meanings. Take care with sneaky tricksters like this one detective! Other words are possible to create, such as ACTION, but we need to find the word that fits with this clue, plus we need to add four-letters which are a word on their own.
  • Question 3

Here is part of a word:

RSE

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

To go backwards

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
EVER
EDDIE SAYS
What is another verb which describes moving backwards? It's REVERSE, so we need to work out which letters are missing to build this mystery word. Take care here! We can add the letters REVE to the start which looks like it works, but this is not a word on its own. To check, can you use it in a sentence? So, instead, we need to add the word EVER after the first letter R-, but before the final two letters -SE. Did you spot that detective? The word REALISE can also be created, but EALI does not make a word on its own and also doesn't fit with this clue.
  • Question 4

Here is part of a word:

PL

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

You will say this if you are asking for something politely

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
EASE
EDDIE SAYS
Which word do you use to be polite when you are asking for something? The missing word EASE is part of the mystery word PLEASE. PLANET is also a word which can be created, but the letters ANET do not make a word on their own and this word also does not match the clue provided.
  • Question 5

Here is part of a word:

TH

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

String

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
READ
EDDIE SAYS
Which word has a similar meaning to the word 'string'? The word READ is part of the secret word THREAD. An option such as THUMPS could be created but would not be correct, as UMPS is not a word on its own and THUMPS is not a synonym for 'string'. Don't let red herrings like this one lead you astray detective!
  • Question 6

Here is part of a word:

BY

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a clue to help you:

Not far

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
NEAR
EDDIE SAYS
How could you describe something if it is 'not far' away, in terms of distance? The missing word NEAR is part of the target word NEARBY. There are other options which can be created by adding different four-letter words, like GRUB to make GRUBBY, but these would not fit with this clue.
  • Question 7

Here is part of a word:

RE

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word.

Here is a synonym to help you:

To remember

girl thinking

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
CALL
EDDIE SAYS
A challenging one here. What is another verb with a similar meaning to 'remember'? The word CALL is part of the secret word RECALL. We can look out for common prefixes to give us clues about where letters may have been removed. These prefixes include: RE-, DIS-, MIS-, etc. Can you think of any other common prefixes which you can add to this list?
  • Question 8

Here is part of a word:

AB

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word.

Here is a clue to help you:

In another country

globe

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
ROAD
EDDIE SAYS
How would you describe a person or thing if they were 'in another country'? The missing word ROAD is part of the target word ABROAD. An option such as ABJECT could be created but would not be correct, as JECT is not a word on its own and ABJECT does not match this clue. Keep up the great work detective - just two final mysteries remain!
  • Question 9

Here is part of a word:

SD

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Frightened

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
CARE
EDDIE SAYS
What is a synonym for 'frightened'? Try replacing it in a sentence if you are not sure: 'The boy was very frightened by the loud noise' could also be written as 'The boy was very ____ by the loud noise'? The missing word CARE is part of the mystery word SCARED. An answer such as STARED would not be correct, as TARE is not a word on its own and STARED is not a synonym for 'frightened'. Let's see what your final challenge is now, word detective!
  • Question 10

Here is part of a word:

NOG

It has had four of its letters taken away by the letter thief.

The letters by themselves make a four-letter word

Here is a synonym to help you:

Zero

Type the four-letter word, which has been removed from somewhere in the bold word, into the box below.

CORRECT ANSWER
THIN
EDDIE SAYS
What is another word for 'zero'? The missing word THIN is part of the secret word NOTHING. Mission complete - you've finished this activity! You can now add four-letter words into sets of letters to create a longer, new word, which matches a clue or synonym provided.
