A prefix is a letter or letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word. When the prefix mis- is added to verbs it generally has the meaning of doing something wrongly.

For example, if you miscount something you count it wrongly.

Josie miscounted the chocolate bars and there weren't enough for everybody.
