# Use Pictures to Understand Division using Grouping

In this worksheet, students will use pictures to understand division by grouping

Key stage:  KS 1

Curriculum topic:   Number: Multiplication and Division

Curriculum subtopic:   Solve Multiplication/Division Problems

Difficulty level:

#### Worksheet Overview

In this activity, we will be looking at division by sharing equally.

When we share equally, it means that every group must have exactly the same number.

Here are 6 penguins shared equally into groups of 2.

This means that when 6  is shared equally into equal groups of 2, there will be 3 groups.

We write this by starting with the total number of penguins, how many are in each group and then how many groups have been made:

The division number sentence will be: 6 ÷ 2 = 3

Now, let's have a look at when we group things into equal groups of 10.

Here, we have 2 groups of 10 frogs. Let's look at the division number sentence.

The first number will be the total number of frogs.

We have started with 20 frogs altogether and shared them into equal groups of 10:

20  ÷ 10 =

To find the answer we just need to work out how many equal groups of 10 were made. There are 2, so we write:

20  ÷ 10 = 2

Ok, are you ready to have a go at some division questions?
