In a series circuit the total voltage (the electrical energy in the circuit) is shared between all the components.
When David adds another lamp into this circuit the total amount of electrical energy flowing through the circuit now has to be shared between three components rather than two. The share of energy that each lamp will receive decreases so the lamps will shine less brightly.

This circuit contains a battery, one lamp, a motor and a switch. It is a parallel circuit.
The symbol for a battery is a short fat line next to a long thin line. In some older books and posters this symbol is sometimes called a cell.
The lamp and motor symbols are very common and should be quite easy to identify. The lamp symbol is a big X inside a circle; the symbol for a motor is a capital letter M inside a circle. Be careful not to confuse the symbol for a lamp with the symbol for a bulb.
The symbol for a switch is a short diagonal line leaning towards the top right of the page as you look at it. In this diagram the terminals (small circles) have been included too.
