This worksheet contains 20 SAT style questions. Questions are taken from across the whole science strand including scientific enquiry (SAT 2013).

These questions are typical of the type students will come across during the examination and are appropriate for those students who will sit the level 3-5 paper.

Harry and Ben were having an argument about orange juice.

Harry said that it was mainly water, while Ben said it couldn't be as it was an orange colour.

Harry said he'd prove it!

First he poured some orange juice into a dish and heated it gently over a flame. After a few minutes they saw a gas rising up from the hot orange juice.

Predict what Harry and Ben saw coming out of the dish.

He poured orange juice into the filter and allowed the liquid to drip through.

The vapour Harry and Ben would have seen would have no colour: the orange colour in orange juice is caused by solids dissolved in the mixture and they cannot evaporate because they're solid!
So, just steam or water vapour.

If it was pure orange juice, Harry and Ben would see little pieces of orange left in the filter paper. They are too big to pass through the tiny holes in the paper with the rest of the juice and get trapped.

When substances dissolve, they separate into tiny, tiny particles, small enough to pass through the little holes in the filter paper. Big bits of orange will get trapped but the dissolved orange solids and sugar pass through.

When you heat a solution, only the water can evaporate away because, although the dissolved solids in the orange juice (like sugar) are really small, THEY ARE STILL SOLID and cannot evaporate away.
So the vapour would have no colour - that's colourless!

Condensation is formed from condensation!
This means that the droplets of water (condensation) are the result of CONDENSING steam into water, taking away its heat energy so it cools down from being a gas to being a liquid.

Lots of people think that there's no gravity on the Moon... Well, there is but it's much less because the Moon is smaller.
It's not really tiny - in fact it's massive compared to you - but it's smaller size creates a smaller pull on objects on its surface so they weigh less.

Since the Moon is smaller it has a smaller pull on you which means you weigh less, so you'd feel lighter and it'd be weird walking as you'd have to skip along rather than walk!

To work this out you have to find 1/6 of 60 which is 10N.
In other words it's 60÷6=10.

Amazingly the size of the Moon has a big influence on the Earth: its gravitational pull 'lifts' the seas a little as the Earth spins, so when it goes around different parts of the world you will experience more or less water, which means that the tide's going up or down/in or out.

Your toothbrush doesn't rely on gravity to work and ordinary soap doesn't either (although a hand dispenser soap delivers liquid soap by gravity, so you can have that if you thought so!).

A plant's roots are vital not only for absorbing water and transporting it to the rest of the plant, but also for helping the plant to remain stable in the soil, even when the wind blows hard!
