In this worksheet, we will learn how to order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number.

We will not be converting the fractions to decimals, but will use the idea of equivalent fractions.

Remember multiply or divide the top and the bottom of a fraction by the same number to change it to an equivalent fraction.

Example

Place these fractions in increasing order:

3   2   5
6 3 9

Answer

We look for the smallest number that 6, 3 and 9 go into.

This will be 18, so we change all the fractions into 18ths.

We multiply top and bottom of 3 sixths by 3:

3 = 9
6 18

We multiply top and bottom of 2 thirds by 6:

2 = 12
3 18

We multiply top and bottom of 5 ninths by 2:

5 = 10
9 18

The increasing order is:

9   10   12
18 18 18

So the answer is:

1. (smallest) 3
6

2. (middle) 5
9

3. (largest) 2
3
