Many singular nouns are pluralised by simply adding -s, but there are a number of exceptions.

A plural noun is used when there is more than one of something.

Nouns ending in -ch, -sh, -x and -ss usually add -es. For example:

church / churches

box / boxes

Irregular plural nouns are nouns that do not become plural by adding -s or -es, as most nouns in the English language do. 

Nouns ending in -y usually change to -ies, unless there is a vowel before the -y. For example:

fairy / fairies

donkey / donkeys

Nouns ending in -f or -fe usually change to -ves. For example:

shelf / shelves

wife / wives

Some nouns change in different ways or don't change at all!

child / children

foot / feet

sheep / sheep
