Preparing for your Presentation

Your teacher will provide the task. Read it carefully and make sure you follow all the instructions.

You need to find information for your presentation. Where you get the information depends on your topic. You could:

  • Talk to or email people who know about the topic.
  • Search for information on the Internet, in the media or in books.

Make brief notes about the information you have gathered. Arrange them into points.

Decide what materials could support your presentation. You could use props or prepare a slide presentation.

Organising your Information

It is helpful to structure your information as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Point 1
  • Point 2
  • Point 3, etc...
  • Conclusion

Write brief paragraphs for each point. Use cards or slides arranged in order to act as prompts to help you remember during your presentation. Number them so they are in order. You might consider making handouts for your audience.

Practise your Presentation

Once you have all your materials (props, presentation and prompts), you should practise your presentation. Go over any unusual words, quotations or statistics before you begin so that you are familiar with them and can be clear and confident.

You might also like to think about where you could ask questions to involve the audience. Think about what they might ask you, and how you would answer. Practise your speech with all your materials in front of a friend or parent if you can. Work on the weaker parts if you identify areas for improvement.

Delivering the Presentation

When you are giving your talk try to do the following:

  • Stand whilst you are talking.
  • Use the tone and pitch of your voice to add variety to your delivery, appearing lively and confident.
  • Speak as fluently as you can, but don't rush.
  • Listen carefully to questions and answer them appropriately. Try to show your knowledge of the topic in your answers.

Evaluation your Presentation

Think about what you did well in your presentation and what you could have improved on. You might consider your delivery, your voice and tone, the content, the audience's reaction and how you handled questions.
