A prefix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word. Knowing what a prefix means can help us to understand new words.

If we add the prefix un- to a word, it usually gives it the opposite meaning.

happy / unhappy

If we add the prefix re- to a word, it usually means that the action is being done again.

paint / repaint

If we add the prefix mis- to a word, it usually means that something is being done wrongly.

behave / misbehave

In this activity, you can practise adding prefixes to words to make new words.

You can also check your words using a dictionary.
