Mrs. Bates's science class are going to carry out an investigation to try to find out how much water a bean seedling needs in order to grow into a healthy plant.

She has already prepared some beans which have germinated (or sprouted) and look like this:

The students in her class are going to investigate how well the beans grow according to how much water they give them each day.

- will it matter how much water they're given?

- how will they measure their seedling's growth?

- will the ones with more water grow more?

- how long will the class be measuring their seedlings for?

These are the sort of questions the class will be asking as they begin their investigation.

Like you, they already know that water is very important for plants.

They know that it is drawn up by the roots and then transported all over the plant.

They know that it's used in the leaves so that the plant can make its food.

They know that it's what gives the plant its shape.

What they want to find out is how much water is it best to give a bean seedling to help it grow well.
