Addition is adding something on.

When you add everything together, you get a total.

Answer

Start at 16 and count 4 forwards.

What do you get then?

How about if we add 5 to a number?

23 + 5 = ?

You need to start at 23 and count 5 forwards. 

You could use the number line to help you. Pop your finger on the number 23 and bounce it along 5 places to the right.

 

23 + 5 = 28

 

 

Remember that when you add a number, you always move to the right.

 

 

Let's try one more.

What happens if we add 6 to a number?

19 + 6 = ?

 

Start at the number 19 and count forwards 6 places. On the number line, bounce your finger 6 places along to the right. What do you land on?

19 + 6 = 25
