This activity is a mixture of division questions.

How many 10p coins can we get from one 50p piece? This is a sharing or division question:

Division questions are much easier to solve if you are confident with your times tables.

If you know the 10 times table, you will know that 5 x 10 = 50. So you can see that 50 ÷ 10 = 5

Answer: We can get 5 coins because 50 ÷ 10 = 5

One way of working out division questions is to actually draw or mark the items that are being shared into equal groups. In the question above, we can draw 10 circles and share 50 dots equally into the circles. We will find that there are 5 dots in each circle.

How about if we have to divide a bigger number? Say we need to divide the number 100 into 2 equal groups? One top tip is to take the end zero off the number 100 and simply divide the number 10 by 2. We can then add the zero to our answer: 10  ÷  2 = 5. Add the zero and the answer is 50.

What about dividing a more difficult number such as 64?

64  ÷  2 = ?

First, split the number 64 into 60 and 4.

Then, 60 ÷ 2 = 30 and 4 ÷ 2 = 2 

Finally, add the answers together: 30 + 2 = 32 so 64 ÷  2 = 32.
