A dictionary is arranged in alphabetical order.

Sometimes words begin with the same letter as each other and may even have the same second letter. If this is the case then the words are arranged by looking at the third letters.

thank   there    thick   thorn   thumb

If the third letters are the same, too, then look at the fourth letters.
