In this activity, we will be learning to multiply proper fractions.
A proper fraction is one where the numerator is smaller than the denominator.
Proper fractions are worth less than one whole.
Let's look at the method of multiplying fractions!
Step 1: Multiply the numerators together.
Step 2: Multiply the denominators together.
Step 3: Simplify the fraction if necessary.
1 x 2 = 2
9 x 3 = 27
The answer is:
2/27
We cannot simplify 2/27 since there is no common factor of 2 and 27.
Let's try an example question together.
Example
Work out the following, remembering to give your answer in its lowest terms.
Answer
Step 1: Multiply the numerators together.
3 x 4 = 12
Step 2: Multiply the denominators together.
5 x 8 = 40
Step 3: Simplify the fraction if necessary.
12/40 can be simplified to 3/10 when we divide both the numerator and denominator by the same factor (4).
The answer will be 3/10.
Does that make sense?
Now it's time to try some questions like this for yourself.
