The prefix re- often has the meaning of doing something again when it is added to a verb.
The sun reappeared from behind the clouds.
Peter had to redo his homework because he lost it.
However, it can sometimes have the meaning of going back. To return means to go back to where you started, not to keep on turning.
My grandad wanted to return to his home town and visit his old friends.
