Each bird has 2 legs.
We want to work out how many legs there are in total.
What is 8 lots of 2?
Answer
In total, there are 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 16 legs

8 x 2 = 16
2 x 8 = 16
Let's look at another example.

How many eyes are there altogether?
What is 6 lots of 2?
In total, there are 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 12 eyes.
