Introduction

When things are grouped in tens, we can count them easily going up in 10s.

Count the eggs.

We could count each egg, one at a time, but that would take forever!

A much better way is to count them in groups of 10, as you can see below: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50.

10 20 30 40 50

There are 50 eggs in total.

How about if you wanted to know how many fingers were being waved in the air by 6 people?

hands

How many fingers does each person have on their hands (if we include the thumbs!) They have 10, of course.

So, we count up in 10s until we've counted 6 people: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.

So, there are 60 fingers being waved in the air!!

Shall we try some questions now?
