When multiplying numbers we need to remember that 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 28 is the same as 7 x 4 = 28.
We can think of the multiplication sign meaning 'lots of' as there are 7 lots of 4 here.
Example:
6 x 2 =
This means 6 lots of 2, so let's count in 2s 6 times:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
Our answer is 12.
If you cannot count in 2s, you could draw a simple number line to help you count along:
Here, we are adding on two 6 times, as it is 6 lots of 2. Drawing a number line may help so that you can add on 2 each time.
Let's see what else we know about multiplication!
