In this activity, we will be learning how to identify parts of an open cube.
The net of a 3D solid is the shape that needs to be cut out of cardboard or paper to fold into the given shape.
The net of a cube normally has six squares.
We will be looking at the nets of open cubes which means that there will be only five squares since the top of the cube is not included.
Let's try an example.
Example
This diagram shows how the net of an open cube folds into the cube itself.
Which face would be the base?
Answer
Each open cube will have the following:
A base, a front, a back, a left and a right face.
It will not have a top.
In our net, the black face is the base of this open cube.
Let's have a go at identifying some more bases.
