A phoneme is a unit of sound. A digraph is two letters that work together to make one sound. The 'ar' digraph sounds like this: Your browser does not support the audio element.
Sometimes the 'ar' digraph can be made in different ways. It can be spelt 'al'. (The 'l' is silent.)

Sometimes the letter 'a' on its own can make the 'ar' phoneme.

If you live in the south of England you may say some other 'a' words with the 'ar' phoneme.

In the words 'heart' and 'are', the phoneme is spelt differently again.
