In this activity, we will be learning how to divide fractions by whole numbers.
When we divide by 2, we are halving something.
When we divide by 3, we are finding a third of it.
When we divide by 4, we are finding a quarter of it.
Dividing by 2 is the same as multiplying by 1/2.
Dividing by 3 is the same as multiplying by 1/3.
Dividing by 4 is the same as multiplying by 1/4 etc.
Let's try an example question together.
Example
Work out the following.
1/9 ÷ 4 = __
Answer
Because dividing by 4 is the same as finding one quarter of a number, this is the same as
1/9 × 1/4
Step 1: Multiply the numerators
1 × 1 = 1
Step 2: Multiply the denominators
9 × 4 = 36
So, the answer is
1/36
1/36 cannot be simplified any further, so this is our final answer.
Now it's time to try some of these questions yourself.
