 # Dividing Fractions (2)

In this worksheet, students divide proper fractions by whole numbers, writing the answer in its simplest form. Key stage:  KS 2

Curriculum topic:  Number: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Curriculum subtopic:  Divide Proper Fractions

Difficulty level: ### QUESTION 1 of 10

When we divide by 2, we are halving something.

When we divide by 3, we are finding a third of it.

When we divide by 4, we are finding a quarter of it.

Dividing by 2 is the same as multiplying by 1/2.

Dividing by 3 is the same as multiplying by 1/3.

Dividing by 4 is the same as multiplying by 1/4 etc.

Example

Work out the following, reducing the answer to its simplest form if possible.

 2 ÷ 4 9

This is the same as

 2 × 1 9 4

2 × 1 = 2

9 × 4 = 36

This gives:

 2 36

But this must be reduced by dividing top and bottom by 2.

 1 18

which we write as   1/18.

Work out the following, reducing the answer to its simplest form if possible.

 2 ÷ 2 3

Work out the following, reducing the answer to its simplest form if possible.

 2 ÷ 4 3
1/6
EDDIE SAYS
Change to
 2 × 1 3 4

2 × 1 = 2
3 × 4 = 12
2/12 reduces to 1/6 by dividing top and bottom by 2.
• Question 4

Work out the following, reducing the answer to its simplest form if possible.

 3 ÷ 6 4
1/8
EDDIE SAYS
Change to
 3 × 1 4 6

3 × 1 = 3
4 × 6 = 24
3/24 reduces to 1/8 by dividing top and bottom by 3.
• Question 5

 3 ÷ 6 5
1/10
EDDIE SAYS
Change to
 3 × 1 5 6

3 × 1 = 3
5 × 6 = 30
3/30 reduces to 1/10 by dividing top and bottom by 3.
• Question 6

Work out the following, reducing the answer to its simplest form if possible.

 3 ÷ 12 4
1/16
EDDIE SAYS
Change to
 3 × 1 4 12

3 × 1 = 3
4 × 12 = 48
3/48 reduces to 1/16 by dividing top and bottom by 3.
• Question 7
