Preview: Know Your Subtraction: Subtract Numbers Between 0 and 20
Need Help?
Introduction
Subtraction is taking something away.
It is the opposite of addition. (Addition is adding something on.)
Look at this example.
Take 4 away from 20 equals
16
We can write it like this, too.
20 - 4 = 16
We take 4 away from 20 to get 16. That's subtraction!
Now try for yourself.
Pop your finger on 20 on the number line. Bounce it back (to the left) 4 places. What number did you get to? It should have been 16 because we know that
20 - 4 = 16
Always count to the left on a number line when you are subtracting.
