Worksheet Overview

Have you already done some synonym or antonym practice, word detective?

Synonyms are words that mean the same or have a very similar meaning to other words.  Does that sound familiar?

They are words like funny and amusing, or cross and angry.

Children laughing

What about an antonym? Antonyms are two words that are opposite in meaning.

These could be words like hot and cold, or tall and short.

Glowing coals

We have an extra step in our challenge today, as not only will you be spotting synonyms and antonyms, you will also be looking out for rhyming words.

Let's try one together so you get the idea.

Here are two clues to a word:

The word is similar in meaning to present.

The word rhymes with shift.

A present

Which word could it be?

Here   Wrapped   Gift   Lift

The answer is gift because a gift is another word for a present and it rhymes with shift.

A pile of presents

Let's try another.

Here are two clues to a word:

The word is opposite in meaning to open.

The word rhymes with toes.

Toes

Which word could it be?

Shut   Close   Leave   Foot

An open door

Can you spot the correct word?

There it is! The answer is close because it is an antonym for open and it rhymes with toes.

It's nearly time for you to get started now, word detective.

Before you do, here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status!
