Understand Rotation to Complete Image Sequence

In this worksheet, students will identify the missing image in a sequence. Students will need to look for rotation and additional layers being added to an image.

Worksheet Overview

Hi shape sorter, we’ve come across this pattern and we need your help.

Which image would come next in this series?

We have to choose one image from the following:

a)         b)         c)         d)         e)

First, we need to work out how each image changes to become the next one in the sequence.

The arrow is rotating by 45 degrees (half a right angle) in a clockwise direction.

We have to look extremely carefully in these questions, as the possible answers all look very similar.

After rotating the fourth image by 45 degrees, we would have an image just like image a.

Therefore, a is our correct answer.

Let’s try another one:

Which image would complete this sequence?

We must choose one image from the following:

a)         b)         c)         d)         e)

First, we need to work out how each image changes to become the next one in the sequence.

We can see that a new layer or an extra circle is being added each time.

The layers alternate between a dashed line and a solid line.

The fourth shape in the sequence has a dashed outer line.

So we need to add a solid line to the outside of this shape to get to the next one in the sequence.

If we do this, we can see that the correct answer is c.

Don’t fall into the trap of selecting d as it looks really similar, but if you look closely it has a dashed not a solid centre circle.

It’s now your turn to find the next image in the series.

Remember to look for rotation and see if there are any additional layers being added.
