'Sequence Longer Sentences' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 1

Year:  Year 1 English worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Writing: Composition

Curriculum subtopic:   Sequence Sentences

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

It is important to sequence sentences in the right order so that they make sense, especially when we want to write something such as a short story or diary entry.

These events are sequenced in the correct order for leaving the house for a walk:

Put your socks on                          Put your shoes on                 Leave the house for a walk

socks        shoes                 girl going for a walk

All stories have their events sequenced. If you think about the order of events in the fairytale 'Jack and the Beanstalk', the beanstalk grew before Jack could climb it.

The sequence is the bean growing first and then Jack climbing it second.

bean shoot   boy climbing a tree

We can sequence short simple sentences with a joining word in the middle.

We can use the joining words and, so, but or because.

Here, the joining word so is used. It makes this sentence longer, turning it into a compound sentence.

The children woke up late so they were late for school.

     someone asleep in bed    school

The sequence is correct as the first event led to the second.

In this activity, you can practise putting words and sentences into the correct sequence so that they make sense.
