In this activity, we’re going to be looking at prefixes.
Prefixes
Prefixes are groups of letters added in front of a word to make a new word.
Most of the time, we can add a prefix to a word without changing the spelling of the word.
For example:
Dis + connect = disconnect
Mis + take = mistake
The Prefix Dis-
Think about the meanings of the words connect and disconnect.
What might the prefix dis- mean?
Dis- means not or the opposite of.
Disconnect means not connected.
Can you think of any other words beginning with the prefix dis-?
We could have:
Dis + like = dislike
Dis + obey = disobey
The Prefix Mis-
Think about the meanings of the words take and mistake.
What might the prefix mis- mean?
Mis- means wrong or false.
Mistake means to do something wrong.
Can you think of any other words beginning with the prefix mis-?
We could have:
Mis + read = misread
Mis + place = misplace
