Subtract Using Negative Numbers

To work out 4 - 5 we start at 4 on a number line and count back 5 to get to -1

So   4 - 5 = -1

To work out -4 - 5 we start at -4 on a number line and count back 5 to get to -9

So   -4 - 5 = -9

Negative numbers can be confusing but they will get easier with practice.

An important thing to remember is that when we add numbers, we move to the right on a number line. When we subtract numbers, we move to the left.
