The development of strong reading skills during the primary phase of education is such an important foundation for all future learning. You can help your child with reading at home in several ways:

  • Make reading fun – create an ethos at home that makes choosing and reading books a real treat e.g. a trip to a bookshop to choose a new book as a reward for good behaviour.
  • Talk to your child’s teacher about their progress with reading and how you can help – some schools prepare advice for parents so that what you do at home reinforces learning at school.
  • Get your child their own library card
  • Make reading practice interactive by asking your child questions about the text
