Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Welcome word detective, we need your help with this word puzzle.

Can we count on you to solve the mystery?

We need to insert the letter into the word below to make a new word:

pant

The letter can be placed anywhere in the word but we cannot jumble the order of the letters.

Let’s add the letter i at the start of the word.

ipant - This doesn’t make a real word.

How about after the first letter?

piant - Also, not a real word.

Let’s try after the second letter:

paint - We have found our real word!

 children with paint on hands

Which real word can we make if we insert the letter n into the word below?

pat

Let’s see what the word would look like with the letter added in different positions:

Position Word created Real or not?
Before 1st letter npat Not real
After 1st letter  pnat Not real
After 2nd letter  pant Real! We have a winner!
After 3rd letter  patn Not real

The correct answer is pant

Let’s try another:

Which real word can we make if we insert the letter m into the word below?

tea

Let’s see what the word would look like with the letter added in different positions:

Position Word created Real or not?
Before 1st letter  mtea Not real
After 1st letter  tmea Not real
After 2nd letter  tema Not real
After 3rd letter  team Real! We have a winner!

The correct answer is team.

  a team

Now, it’s your turn to create new words by inserting letters.

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

Say each of the words out loud, this will help you to recognise if it's a real word.

Good luck letter inserter!

There's only one word we can make adding a D to the word FUN, and that is FUND. The other words are definitely rather funny but sadly not correct. Could you even pronounce some of the words you made?!?
  • Question 2

Here's another exciting question!

Add the letter O to the word CAT to make a new word.

Fill in the grid.

We have done the first line here for you.

CORRECT ANSWER
 Word createdreal or not?

EDDIE SAYS
There's only one word we can make adding an O to the word CAT, and that is COAT. Shame there's not such a thing as a cato - I like that word!

Use lowercase letters when inputting your answers.

CORRECT ANSWER
 Word createdreal or not?
Before 1st letter
After 1st letter
After 2nd letter
After 3rd letter
EDDIE SAYS
Wow! Did you 'spot' that adding an S to the word POT can make 3 different words? Sometimes we might think that adding an 'S' is easy because you can make a plural but always work through the steps to be sure you haven't missed any other words.
  • Question 5

Add the letter B to the word OIL to make a new word.

Fill in the grid.

In the 'real or not' box, select yes or no.

Use lowercase letters when inputting your answers.

CORRECT ANSWER
 Word createdreal or not?
Before 1st letter
After 1st letter
After 2nd letter
After 3rd letter
EDDIE SAYS
Adding a B to OIL makes BOIL. None of the other words appear in the English dictionary and so are incorrect (although apparently the word Obil is a Hebrew word for camel driver!)
  • Question 6

You're halfway there already, word detective!

Where can you add the letter L to make SEA into a new word?

Write the new word in the box below. Remember that the word you have made must make sense!

CORRECT ANSWER
Seal
EDDIE SAYS
There is only one place to add the L that gives us a word that makes sense and that is SEAL. lsea, slea, sela aren't real words.
  • Question 7

Where can you add the letter D to make RAW into a new word?

Write the new word in the box below. Remember that the word you have made must make sense!

CORRECT ANSWER
Draw
EDDIE SAYS
There is only one place to add the D that gives us a word that makes sense and that is at the beginning to make DRAW. Rdaw, radw, rawd aren't real words. Although rawd does sound a bit like 'rude'!
  • Question 8

Where can you add the letter to make TAP into a new word?

Write the new word in the box below. Remember that the word you have made must make sense!

CORRECT ANSWER
Tape
EDDIE SAYS
There is only one place to add the E that gives us a word that makes sense and that is at the end to make TAPE. Etap, teap, taep, aren't real words. E, like the letter S, will often go at the end of the word but it's always worth checking all possible positions - just in case.
  • Question 9

Where can you add the letter A to make LED into a new word?

Write the new word in the box below. Remember that the word you have made must make sense!

CORRECT ANSWER
Lead
EDDIE SAYS
There is only one place to add the A that gives us a word that makes sense and that is after the second letter to make LEAD. Aled, laed, leda, aren't real words.
  • Question 10
