# Fold Regular or Irregular Shapes Along a Central Fold

In this worksheet, students will visualise folding regular and irregular shapes (including arrows, hexagons, octagons, diamonds, etc.) along a vertical dashed line. They will then identify a shape that matches the original one after folding.

#### Worksheet Overview

Welcome, shape detective! Are you ready to use the visual part of your brain and imagine shapes in your head?

Look at the shape below:

Now imagine this same shape being folded along the dashed line shown below.

The direction of the arrow shows us which way it has been folded.

Which of the following images would look like this shape after it has been folded?

a)         b)         c)        d)

The correct answer is b!

The left-hand side of the arrow is triangular and this has been folded on top of the main body of the arrow.

Let’s investigate another shaped piece of paper now.

Imagine this shape is folded along the dashed line:

Which of the following images would show what it looks like after it has been folded?

a)         b)         c)         d)

The correct answer is a!

We are folding the pointed end of the heart behind in a straight line, so option d cannot be correct.

Then we need to consider how much of the tip we are folding over - option b is too much while option c is too little.

Option a shows the right amount folded behind so this is correct.

It’s now your turn to visualise folding other shapes.

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:   If you find this challenging, you can create the shapes on a piece of paper and try folding them in real life.

Good luck, fab folder!
