Worksheet Overview

Hi there, 2D shape detective!

Let’s have a look at the differences between reflection and rotation:

Reflection is what you would see if you placed a mirror in front of a shape.

It is a mirror-image.

Rotation occurs when you turn a shape.

The shape stays at a fixed middle-point and turns either clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Original Image  Reflection           Rotation

Take a look at this picture of a car:

Only one of the options below shows the image of the car after it has been rotated.

The others may have been reflected or changed in another way.

Which option shows rotation?

a)         b)         c)         d)

The answer is d!

Option b is too small and option c is too big.

Option a has been reflected rather than rotated - see how the bonnet of the car is pointing to the right instead of the left?

Only option d has maintained the same dimensions and has been rotated 90 degrees (a quarter of a turn) clockwise from its original position.

It’s now your turn to find the rotations.

Pssstt!

Here's a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

Make sure the option you choose is an exact replica of the original. It must have the same, colour, shape, outline and size. Only the rotation changes!

Good luck rotating the shapes detective!
